Maremma Magic! provides Lisa's fun-lovin' guests a wide range of experiences: wondrous sculptures parks, Italian cowboys, Etruscan caves, and lots of wine tasting.
Lisa first came to Maremma to experience the whimsy, wonder and color of a vast outdoor sculpture garden. The Giardino dei Tarocchi is the vision of French woman artist Niki de Saint-Phalle. For twenty years, Niki worked with her assistants sculpting twenty-two monstrous ceramic and mirrored mosaic figures that represent the Major Arcana of Tarot. Here, you are allowed to rediscover a childlike fancy as you frolic in, on, around and under these wondrous figures that occupy the fields above Etruscan ruins . This is one of the most delightful adventures you will ever experience.
The second reason Lisa came to Maremma was to encounter the legendary butteri cowboys of Tuscany's Southwest. These are the oldest cowboys in Western Civilization, tracing back to 6,000 B.C. In 1890, when Buffalo Bill Cody came over to Italy with his Wild West show, he learned of the legendary butteri cowboys and , while in Napoli, challenged them to Ia sfida (contest) to see who could break three wild colts. Buffalo Bill ordered a stop to the la sfida, seeing quickly that the Italian cowboys had superior techniques. Bill Cody never conceded, but the victory claimed by the butteri back then is still today a source of great pride.
Their wranglin' skills and Slow Food way of life have made the butteri a national treasure. Theirs is a true Slow Food culture. A culture that sadly is fading from the Tuscan landscape. We will spend a morning with them learning their history, habits and have a chance to ask our own questions of them. I butteri work with the rare Maremma breeds of animals: cattle, horses and working dogs, all dating back to 2,000 years ago.
And... the third reason, Lisa had to come to Maremma: Mother Nature's masterpiece: the Cascades of the Mill, more commonly known as Saturnia. This is yet another experience that defies written description, and must be experienced. The water is also enriched with sulfur and thermal plankton, which is believed to possibly aid skin, digestive and circulatory conditions like high blood pressure.
